I am looking back at the picture and reminding myself why I am doing all of this because next week is another one of those weeks. Actually, the way the schedule is working out it looks like every other week until the end of the semester is going to be insane. Next week I have to teach Monday, have problem sets due Tuesday and Wednesday, have a presentation and an exam Thursday, and then collapse on Friday? So, that is enough, right? But then on Tuesday of this past week we get to choose presentation/paper topics in International Economics. On Thursday the professor asks me if I can give my presentation on Tuesday. Yes, 5 days away when I am working on all of these other things too. I just looked at her incredulously and said “um, no”. She was fine with it and I don’t think really expected I could be prepared that quickly (hello, no research done yet). I am glad that I said “no” rather than “well, I guess I can try”. That would not have been pretty.

Brooke really is my inspiration for all the hard work and sacrifice. Being a professor will allow me to be the mother I want to be to her growing up. I like to remind myself of that every once in a while when things get crazy. Here is a particularly adorable picture of her I took this morning.

I finally have a research topic almost accepted by my seminar professor. He said that it is a good idea, and I am in the process of scouring journals to make sure nobody else has done this specific thing. You are not going to steal my research idea and publish ahead of me if I tell you, are you? There might be finance spies out there.

Until this year, I don’t think I had a full appreciation for how hard research really is. Right now I am trying to come up with an original research idea to implement for a paper in my seminar class. My first two ideas were shot down by the professor. (Let me add that all the students have had a similar fate and that it is especially hard because I am trying to find a mildly interesting topic in a class where we have not done much that is remotely interesting to me in a professional manner.) It seems that for every idea you have, someone has beat you to the punch and already published on the topic or already has a working paper on the topic. It is truly a dog eat dog world out there, and you need to be the one riding at the front of the wave when it comes to the tide of research. My classmates are also learning the same lesson, and I have to admit that it is mildly disheartening. I can only hope it looks a little less daunting when you have defined your areas of interest and become a member of your little elite group of colleagues. Right now I am still fairly clueless about the research I want to call my own. But I know what I don’t want to do!

Scott took the nerd test and did not score nearly as I as I did. I guess his extreme computer nerdiness was not a match for my unique blend computer and science nerdiness. I am officially the nerd of the house.

My friend Deborah just posted her nerd score in her blog. I decided to see how nerdy I really am. Eat your heart out, Deborah. I think the only one I know who may score higher than me is my husband.

No pressure to succeed or anything, Brooke, but please enjoy running around in this doctor gear. Grandma and Grandpa have already started saving for Princeton and medical school. Seriously though, she loved playing with a toy stethoscope they had at the gym and thus got her own to play with at home. I am including a picture of our future doctor and the face she makes when I ask her to smile for the camera.

About a month later, I finally got the results that I passed my Ph.D. qualifying exams! More precisely, I received a “high pass” (the highest score you can receive).
Note: I actually got the results about a week ago, but having the first trimester yuckies all the time has really muted my desire to do anything other than lie in the bed watching tv. Unfortunately, this is not good for my blogging or study habits.
